The Hardest Parts of Real Estate No One Talks About

gif

Real Estate is often seen as a highlight reel but behind every glorified post and beautiful home we highlight there is reality that's far more complex, demanding and human than meets the eye.

We asked members of our team to share the parts of this industry that don’t always get talked about. Here’s what they had to say.

Breaking Into a Saturated Industry

One of the biggest challenges, especially early on, is simply getting started. As Alissa Tosches explains, most people already know multiple agents. Getting yourself to be a front runner In the minds of your sphere takes time, strategy and resilience. Leads don't just appear, you have to actively build your business every single day.

The Emotional Weight Behind Every Transaction

While many assume real estate is transactional, it is deeply emotional. Chelsea Brennan shares that the hardest part is guiding clients through major life decisions while balancing excitement, fear, finances, and timing. Every deal carries emotional weight, and clients rely on their agent to bring clarity and confidence in high-pressure moments. Whether it’s delivering tough news, navigating uncertainty, or helping clients walk away from a deal that no longer serves them, agents are constantly managing both logistics and emotions at the same time.

Keeping Deals Together When Everything Is on the Line

What the public sees is the end result. What they don’t see is everything happening behind it. As Samantha puts it, keeping deals together is one of the hardest parts of the job. A transaction can shift at any moment. Some things we face as agents on a day-to-day include: offers falling through, inspections uncovering issues, or buyers and sellers changeing direction. Agents are juggling timelines, negotiations, repairs, and expectations, all while protecting their clients’ best interests.

In some cases, the pressure becomes even more real. Maddie Parvey shared a situation where a last-minute HVAC issue during a final walkthrough nearly jeopardized a deal. To keep the transaction moving forward, she made the decision to personally contribute toward the fix, ensuring her client didn’t lose their home over a final hurdle.

The Myth of “Flexibility”

Real estate is often marketed as a flexible career. The truth is more nuanced. Many agents agree that while no two days look the same, there is rarely true time off.

Abigail Chrisafideis describes it as a 24 hour job where you are always on. Calls don’t wait for convenient times, and opportunities often come when you least expect them. Maddie Parvey and Samantha Worden both emphasize that your schedule becomes your clients’ schedule. Nights, weekends, and last-minute changes are part of the job.

Even outside of working hours, agents are thinking about deals, responding to messages, and finding ways to grow their business. It’s flexible in structure, but demanding in reality.

The Sacrifices Behind the Success

With that level of commitment comes sacrifice. Time is the most common one mentioned. Time with family, time with friends, and the ability to fully “clock out” are all things that shift in this career.

Chelsea Brennan notes that being fully invested in clients often means giving up nights and weekends. Abigail Chrisafideis shares that plans can change at a moment’s notice to get a deal done. Others point to financial uncertainty, especially in the early stages. As Brooke Coughlin highlights, agents don’t get paid until a deal closes. There is significant time, energy, and money invested long before any return is seen.

Why It’s Still Worth It

Despite all of the challenges, every agent we spoke to came back to the same answer: this work matters. It’s about helping someone buy their first home. It’s about guiding a family through a transition. It’s about being part of a major life moment and making it feel less overwhelming.

For some, it’s the relationships built along the way. For others, it’s the ability to help clients build their future. And for many, it’s the simple but powerful moment of seeing a client smile on closing day. Real estate isn’t easy. It’s not always glamorous. And it certainly isn’t passive.

But for those who commit to it, it’s one of the most rewarding careers there is.

Thinking about buying or selling… what part feels most overwhelming?

  • Finances/Affordability

  • The process itself

  • Timing the market

  • Making the right decision
